A SWISS SPLIT-PEARL SET AND ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Guidon, Gide & Blondet fils (fl. from 1801 onwards), Geneva 1801/1805, later struck with two French import marks for gold 1864-1893, the enamel miniature in the manner of Jean-Louis Richter (1766-1841)
Flattened octagonal box, the cover, sides and base enamelled in translucent blue on a wavy scalework guilloché pattern, within a white enamel border, the lid inset with an octagonal enamel plaque depicting Venus and Cupid at an Altar of Love next to a herm of Bacchus, against a landscape background, within a gold leaf and split-pearl frame, the sides similarly enamelled and flanked by white enamel triangles on a black enamel ground, the black enamelled cut-corners centred with lozenge-shaped white enamel reserves enclosing gold pellets en taille d'épargne
