Lot Essay

The signature on this miniature appears to be unique and shows that the Gardelle brothers, grandsons of Jean Petitot, worked closely together such as their Genevan colleagues, the Huauts and the Mussards. Whilst Robert Gardelle is better known as a painter of large oil portraits, Daniel Gardelle was the first teacher of Jean-E. Liotard.
