This miniature is after Giovanni Battista Lampi's rectangular oil portrait painted between October and December 1791 in Jassy, then capital of Moldavia, and now in the Regional Museum, Ilianovsk (illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Un rittratista nell'Europa delle corti, Giovanni Battista Lampi 1751-1830, Trento, Castello del Buonconsiglio, 2001, p. 68, fig. 61). Popov was President of the Russian Council of State and friend of Potemkin and Tsars Paul I and Alexander I.
