A Pair of Art Deco Diamond Bracelets/Necklace, by Rubel Frères
This lot is offered without reserve. The Maison Rubel Frères was originally formed by Jean and Robert Rubel in the 1920s and famously created jewels for the great Parisian Houses such as Van Cleef & Arpels. This was not their sole outlet, however, and lot 639 also bears witness to their production for Arnold Ostertag, a Swiss jeweller who founded his French Maison in 1920 in Paris, and whose Art Deco jewels, clocks and compacts rivalled those of the most famous jewellers of the period. The Rubel brothers were based in Paris until emigrating initially for South America and then settling in the United States in 1939 where they worked for Neiman Marcus and were exclusively responsible for the New York production for Van Cleef & Arpels. Their affiliation was dissolved in 1943, when Jean opened in Fifth Avenue under his Americanised name John Rubel Co, but their joint skill and talent lives on through such fluid, clean and tactile jewels as the earrings and bracelets offered here.
