MARK OF ELIZABETH GODFREY, LONDON, 1741
Inverted bell shaped and on a spreading foot, the lower body and detachable cover cast and chased with foliage strapwork on a textured ground, the upper body engraved with strapwork and matting, with two leaf-capped handles, the cover with a baluster foliage finial, engraved with an inscription and the Royal arms below the crown of Hanover with a label for difference, marked under base and on cover bezel
13 in. (33 cm.) high
72 oz. (2,250 gr.)
The inscription reads 'The Gift of Ernest Augustus KING OF HANOVER to his Godson John Scott, Viscount Encombe December 10th 1845.'
Provenance
A gift from Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover (1771-1851), fifth son of King George III and Queen Charlotte, to his godson John Scott, Viscount Encombe and later 3rd Earl of Eldon (1845-1926).
