Lot Essay

The Iaroslavl service was made in 1776-1777 by various London silversmiths such as George Heming and William Chawner, as with the examples here, and others including Robert Jones and John Scofield. The original inventories record '8 similar [oval] dishes numbered 6', with a total weight of 20 funts 9½ zolotniks. Foelkersam, in vol. 2 of his inventory of the Imperial silver published in 1907, pp. 246-251, gives an account of the extant pieces and reprints a copy of the original order of 1775 which mentions '102 various dishes'.
