Lot Essay

While My Guitar Gently Weeps, one of Harrison's most popular songs, was composed by him in India during the Beatles' visit to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at Rishikesh in the spring of 1968. According to Mark Lewisohn, around the third week of May, 1968 ...the Beatles congregated at 'Kinfauns', George's bungalow in Esher, Surrey, and taped 23 demo recordings using George's Ampex four-track machine. Most [including this song] ...ended up on the Beatles' next LP, the double-set commonly called the 'White Album'... Two months later, on Thursday 25th July, 1968, George recorded While My Guitar Gently Weeps in Studio Two, EMI Studios, London. It seems highly likely that this set of lyrics would have been used for this session as according to Lewisohn, although George took away two reels of outtakes for home listening on this occasion ...he left behind the 7.00pm-3.15 am session's one and only numbered take, an exquisitely simple solo vocal and acoustic guitar job - including an extra, final verse not included in the released version...
