James Byam Shaw's autograph notes on this drawing are attached to the mount:
'This is a sketch certainly by Francesco Guardi, of the projected Teatro Manin, planned by the architect Pietro Bianchi and to be decorated by Guardi, facing the Bacino di San Marco, on the site of the present sailing club, across the bridge from the Academia della Arti (now Capitaneria del Porto).
See Fiocco in Dedalo, June 1933, for a large drawing by Guardi in a private collection in Berlin, showing the whole waterfront including the projected theatre; also the album in the Museo Correr, with Bianchi's plans for the theatre and three drawings by Guardi for its decoration - (I believe the two roundels to be Giacomo - one dated 1787 - and only the sketch for the act-drop to be by Francesco).
The Theatre was never built.'
