Lot Essay

This drawing may be connected to Cano's wooden sculpture of the Virgen de Belén now in the Museum of Grenada Cathedral (H.E. Wethey Alonso Cano, Pintor, esculatory arquitecto, Madrid, 1983, no. 113, pl. 129). The sculpture differs from the drawing principally in Christ's position on his mother's lap. For comparable drawings see H.E. Wethey, op.cit., nos. D-38, D-47, pls. 58, 118. An alternative attribution to Juan de Sevilla, who also worked in Grenada has also been proposed.
