Jan de Bisschop studied law in Leiden between 1649 and 1652. As well as setting up practice in The Hague he also became a prolific amateur draftsman and etcher and even founded a drawings academy. With a love of ancient and Italian art he became an influential figure in the advancement of classicist taste that became widespread in The Netherlands towards the end of the seventeenth century. De Bisschop excelled in wash drawings of Dutch views and landscapes, many of them with an italianate feel, said to have been influenced by his contemporary, the artist Bartholomeus Breenbergh.
