The strong washes, heavy hatching and even the presence of the dog are all reminscent of drawings around Hoogstraten, for example in a drawing attributed to him in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, 1981, V, no. 1198x). We are grateful to Peter Schatborn for making this suggestion.
