An autograph letter, signed, 25th May 1961, written in blue ballpoint pen from 1 The Green, Ripley, Surrey to Eric Clapton's art school sweetheart Vivian Stanistreet, in response to one he'd received from her ending their relationship, telling her that he had meant to break off their relationship the previous evening but that she'd beaten him to it, adding: ...Now that you have finally ended it, I am sad but relieved. It wasn't hard to see that you had lost interest, and it hurt... adding in a more resilient vein: ..I shall go and look for another 'bird' now but I will have all your troubles with me..., then rather bitterly ...Ah, well as you got your letter in first you can tell everyone that you chucked me..., signing off ...Well dear, Maybe some other time love Eric. xxx P.S. I bet it takes 14 pints to do it tonight 1p.; accompanied by a Hollyfield County Secondary School Prize Giving Programme 14th November, 1960, listing E.P. Clapton and V.Stanistreet amongst the G.C.E. Lot Essay

An accompanying note from Vivian gives the background to her relationship with Eric Clapton. ...I first met Eric when we both started at Junior Art School together when we were thirteen. We were in the same class...and...had the same crazy sense of humour and would giggle about more or less anything...We were just...really good mates till we left to go to Kingston Art School which is when me and Eric became girlfriend/boyfriend. We used to go to the L'Auberg coffee bar in Richmond and Eel Pie Island. The latter to see Long John Baldry when he was playing. There was nothing mind blowing or name dropping about it then, just drinking cider, mooching about Richmond, rolling under a blanket on Richmond green...and a bit of groping outside on the island in the interval!...We were girlfriend/boyfriend for only a couple of months...then it sort of ended, but we stayed good mates through the first year of Probation at Art School, but Eric was 'asked to leave' as he hadn't done enough work. This was because his life was his music...
