in the form of owls, each standing resolutely with rounded body, diminutive feet and fanning tail serving as supports, their domed heads as lids, with staring black rimmed eyes and short curved beaks, two with 'jaguar paw' wings held against the chest, and the largest with crescentic molded wings, and square pectoral trimmed with Mayan scroll motifs, each painted in lacquer technique in sea-green, golden yellow, pale blue, white, black and reddish brown.

These owl containers could be a reference to the 'messenger owls' in the Maya-Quiche Creation epic, the Popol Vuh. Herein there is an episode in which owls are sent from the Death Gods to take a young virgin to her death after she is miraculously impregnated by one of the Hero Twins.
