MAYAN GRAYWARE VESSEL
LATE CLASSIC, ca. A.D. 550 - 950
carved with a dignitary in profile, possibly one of the Hero Twins, gesturing with his right hand and holding a plumed shield in the other, wearing a wide, yoke-like ballgame belt, with an avian mask projecting from the back, with long curled tongue, net trunks, elaborate jade jewelry with an Ahau pendant and ballgame helmet with feathers streaming from both sides, a panel of bold pseudo-glyphs on the reverse, sunken areas with remains of red pigment.
