Lot Essay

Born in Innsbruck in 1838, Franz Richard Unterberger attended the Academies of Munich, Weimar and Düsseldorf before studying under the landscapist Oswald von Achenbach. He travelled substantially before moving to Brussels in 1860. He painted his first Italian subject in 1866 and in the following decade numerous Neapolitan views.

Between realism, idealism and an intense interest in the quality and effects of light, Unterberger sought what he described as the puro vero.

The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Dr. Sybille-Karen Moser.
