A SOUTH ARABIAN BRONZE BOWL
CIRCA 1ST-3RD CENTURY A.D.
Hemispherical in form, decorated on the interior in repoussé and enhanced with incision with a processional frieze including (counter-clockwise) a lion attacking a kneeling human holding a staff, a dog leaping toward the staff, a bird, a reined horse joined to a cart, two individuals riding in the cart, one holding the reins, the other aiming a bow at a lion behind, the lion with a diminutive human in his mouth, the figure hanging upside down and holding a knife, a sphinx with its wings upraised, the bulging scalloped tondo encircled by petals, punched decoration along the interior and exterior of the infolded rim, an inscription in Old South Arabian on the interior below the rim reading, "hand of Zayed son of Wasmiya'," two perforations below the rim; a very worn inscription on the exterior below the rim reading in part, perhaps, "Masyar son of Zayed"
