CIRCA EARLY TO MID 6TH CENTURY B.C.
One Rhodian, in the form of the head of an eagle carrying a serpent within its beak, the serpent's body wrapping around the eagle's head and coiling along the vessel edge, the eagle with round eyes, some details and ornament in red-to-black, the vessel spout centered at the top of the eagle's beak; and one Italo-Corinthian, in the form of a hare, depicted crouching with its legs folded beneath its body, the long ears extending back, the fur rendered by stippling, the vessel mouth at the top of the head, perforated behind the neck for suspension

Lot Essay

Rhodian figural vases in the form of an eagle with a snake are comparatively rare. Only two others are listed by Ducat (Les Vases Plastiques Rhodiens, p. 114, Type C, nos. 1 and 2).
