AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED AMPHORA
ATTRIBUTED TO THE WHITE SACCOS PAINTER, CIRCA 320-310 B.C.
The obverse with two women in added white within an Ionic naiskos, the woman to the right seated on a red cushion upon a throne, her feet on a foot-rest, wearing a chiton with two red stripes and a himation, pulling the edge with her right hand, a fan on her lap, her companion standing before her wearing a similar chiton, holding an open box and a ball of wool, a fillet, a ball of wool and a kylix in the field, fillets and phialae surrounding the naiskos, the naiskos plinth with complex meander punctuated with black squares, with rosettes, white lines, and a band of ovolo on the neck; the reverse with a large profile female head facing left, her hair bound in a sakkos, with black lines on the neck, framed by bands of wave; a band of meander below the scenes, palmettes on either side of the neck, ivy leaf and tendrils on the mouth, a palmette complex below each handle, details in added white, red and yellow
