Raised from a single sheet of silver, flaring to the wide out-turned rim, lathe turned with a groove encircling the interior of the body, grooved along the rim, the mouth gilt, a centering mark and lathe-turned rings on the underside

Lot Essay

This vessel may have originally been fashioned as a mug, with a separately made ring handle soldered to the body. See, for example, no. 60, p. 103 in Oliver, Silver for the Gods, 800 Years of Greek and Roman Silver.
