Lot Essay

This necklace also forms a bracelet with the help of an ingenious system at the back which can be unlocked and the necklace slides into a straight position. Once the diamond part of the necklace is detached, the bracelet is ready for wear. It is yet another example of Van Cleef & Arpels' transformable jewellery for which the House has acquired a reputation. Recognising that a woman's precious jewellery may well give her double the pleasure if she can wear it one day as a necklace, the other as a ring, or a pair of earrings in the evening as pendants and during the day as clips. Nowhere is Van Cleef & Arpels' imagination and sense for the unusual, even humorous, better exemplified than in the charming sapphire and ruby "Ladybird" bracelet/ring offered as lot 1001 in the New York Van Cleef & Arpels sale.
