Lot Essay

The "Flamme" brooches made their first appearance in 1934, replacing the geometric designs so typical of the previous decade. Their extraordinary versatility and style contributed greatly to their popularity: according to personal caprice they could be pinned on a neat hat as the model and actress Capucine in a photograph in 1950 (cf. Gilles Nèret, Ces Bijoux qui font Rêver, Solar, Paris 1990, page 134 and Sylvie Raulet, Van Cleef & Arpels, Éditions du Regard, Paris 1986, page 117), on clothes, or in the hair, like Maria Callas when she attended the famous ball organised by Elsa Maxwell in Venice in 1957, and Jaqcueline Kennedy during an official trip to Southern India in 1962 (cf. Marc Petit, Van Cleef & Arpels: Reflections of Eternity, Éditions Cercle d'art, Paris 2006, plate 134). Such iconic fashion names strengthened the successful revival of the "Flamme" brooches in the 1950s.
