GUANGXU IRON-RED SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1875-1908)

The bottle vase potted with a slightly compressed globular body rising to a cylindrical neck, enamelled throughout with numerous iron-red bats in flight amidst colourful ruyi-clouds, the gilt mouth rim encircled by a ruyi collar, and the base with upright lappets above the foot

Lot Essay

This design of the hundred bats among clouds was particularly popular during the Guangxu reign, and can be found decorating vessels of various forms. A pair of vases of this form sold in our New York Rooms, 20 September 2002, lot 380.
