Original red cloth, black morocco spine labels, uncut and partially unopened (some pale staining to spines, some labels chipped).

FIRST EDITION. Lilian Marguerite Medland (1880-1955) was the daughter of Lewis Medland a wealthy naturalist and big game hunter. She trained as a nurse and met Charles Stonham, a surgeon at Westminster Hospital where he noticed her talent as an artist and commissioned her to produce the illustrations for the present work. She later met Tom Iredale whilst sketching in the British Museum, married him in about 1913 and went to Australia with him in 1923. She illustrated a number of Australian bird books, and died there in 1955. Nissen 898. (5)
