3 volumes, 12o (173 x 104 mm). Half-titles, advertisement leaf in vol. III. (N5 in vol. I with short marginal tear crossing a few letters, some occasional pale spotting.) Near contemporary half calf, marbled boards (some drying and rubbing, a few spine labels lacking, old descriptions mounted on front pastedown). Provenance: Augustine Birrell (bookplate in vol. I).

FIRST EDITION. Jane Austen wrote Mansfield Park between February 1811 and June 1813. Published in May of 1814 in a small edition of about 1250 copies, it was completely sold out by November. Contemporary comments suggest that the popularity of the novel may be attributed to the morality and virtue of Austen's heroine, Fanny Price. Gilson A6; Keynes, p. 11; Sadleir I, 62c.
