One volume only (of three), 8o (208 x 135 mm). Aldine anchor device on last leaf. (Some dampstaining.) Contemporary Venetian gilt- and blind-tooled deep-brown goatskin, panelled sides with multiple fillets and roll-tooled borders, decorated with leaf, arabesque and comet tools, diamond panel at center of sides, compartments of spines diapered, gauffred edges with lacework pattern (restored in places, gilt faded, somewhat dry, text block slightly cracked at beginning). Provenance: early inscription and writing on title, some marginalia; purchased from Lucien Goldschmidt, 6 April 1955.

Giovanni Pontano, an Umbrian who settled in Naples and served as secretary, tutor, and diplomat to the Aragonese court, was the most important humanist of fifteenth-century Naples. His many works of poetry, philosophy and social commentary were cited by contemporaries as masterful examples of Ciceronian style.
