Contemporary Parisian binding by Doll, blue paper boards, imitating morocco, gilt border of roll tool of palmettes outlined by double and single fillet, and dotted line, central panel of upper cover gilt stamped "A.S.A.S. Mgr Le Prince Cambacerès Archi-Chancelier de l'Empire," lower cover with central gilt interwined initials, flatt spine in six compartments gilt lettered in second, others with a leafy design, gilt edges (very minor chipping at extremeties). Provenance: Jean-Jacques-Rigis de Cambacerès, Duke of Parma, and archchanceller of the French Empire (binding); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 8 September 1961.
A contemporary binding by one of Napoléon's favorite binders, in very good condition, considering the delicate paper boards. Jean-Jacques-Régis de Cambacérès (1753-1824), was one of the authors of the "code Napoleon," France's first modern legal code, which was enormously influential in European and American legal history.
