Taylor's "scientific management" was effectively the practice of time and motion studies of the working day, with the intention of streamlining the production process. Taylor studied not only factory conditions and working methods, but also machinery and tools, and he designed a new method of tempering tool steel which enabled quicker metal-cutting. PMM 403.
