AN EBULLIENT, UPBEAT LETTER TO HER BROTHER-IN-LAW, with a striking description of the treatment of her maid, a woman of color, by the Secret Service. "I was going to call you last night & ask you to come & have a drink...while I was getting ready...--it was like a Marx brothers movie. I washed my hair and Provy [Providencia Paredes, her White House maid]...plugged in the dryer & blew our every fuse in the U.S. Embassy....If I could have found the phone in the dark I could have called you--but it was like the tunnel of Love--everyone groping and saying Oh excuse me & when the lights went on I was standing in a towel in a closet with the electrician...I always think of Provy as a member of the family until I am abroad & suddenly the Secret Service is embarrassed to take her to see the sights in the evening because he suddenly realizes that...she is colored....And you just see her looking sad the next day & know it is something you can never talk about--even though I've told him before that he has to take Provie everywhere..." She is grateful to Peter who "made her happier than she has ever been...drinking champagne & dancing with your friends & you bringing her home--Dear dear Peter...." In closing she writes "I'll be back Nov. 12 with open running sores!--of exhaustion...You are my brother in law forever even if you are married to Gina Lollabrigida & I hope you feel the same way...."
Patricia Kennedy married the English actor Peter Lawford in 1954; they separated in 1963 and were divorced 12 years later. (4)
