[MONTANUS, Arnoldus or John OGILBY (1600-1676)]. Nova Virginiae Tabula. [Amsterdam or London, 1671].
Hand-colored engraved map, 290 x 356 mm platemark (392 x 365 mm sheet). (Closed backed tear at lower central image, two small wormholes.)
One of the many fine derivatives of John Smith's 1612 map of Virginia, this is Verner's derivative 8, state 1, and was used either in Montanus's De nieuwe en onbekende Weereld (Amsterdam, 1671) or John Ogilby's America (London, 1671). "This is a careful copy of the Hondius-Blaeu version of the Smith map but smaller in size and somewhat more decorative. In the upper right corner is a 'Notarum' on a small panel surrounded by figures of animals including a llama and goats and two Indian figures one of which holds a bow. This plate was prepared by Meurs for the Dutch edition of Montanus... The plate was then printed for Ogilby's America" (Coolie Verner in Tooley, The Mapping of America, chapter 4). The watermark, here indistinct, differentiates the distribution of the map to the Montanus and Ogilby publications.
