Witherington exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1811 until 1863. Until 1829, a significant proportion of his pictures had Indian subjects. Most of these were landscapes of the area in and around Bombay, and Witherington appears to have based his views on sketches made by a Lieutenant-Colonel Johnson of the Engineers. This exotic view of India would have appealed to contemporary interest in Britain's Empire.
