Wladyslaw Slewinski quitte la Pologne et arrive à Paris en 1888. Il y rencontre entre autres Gauguin qui très vite l'apprécie et l'encourage. Il retrouve ce dernier en Bretagne au début des années 1890. Toutefois, les peintures de Slewinski doivent peu à Gauguin. Leur synthétisme s'accompagne d'une palette souvent sombre et restreinte, avec une touche rapide et des traits noirs définissant les contours, à l'exemple du présent tableau. On situe l'exécution de ce dernier soit vers 1898, année durant laquelle l'artiste peint un autre tableau de Ludwig (Garçon à la fleur rouge; Jaworska no. 49), soit plus tard, vers 1914 au cours du dernier séjour de Slewinski en Bretagne.

In 1888 Wladyslaw Slewinski left Poland for the French capital. There, amongst others, he met Gauguin who was quick to appreciate his work and encourage him artistically. While they met again in Brittany in the early 1890s, Slewinski's paintings owe little to Gauguin. In the present work he employed a sombre and restricted palette, defining the figure with quick strokes and heavy contours. Garçon breton au morceau de pain is characteristic of his works executed circa 1898, the year during which the artist painted another composition depicting Ludwig (Garçon à la fleur rouge; Jaworska no. 49). Stylistically it could also date to Slewinski's last stay in Brittany in 1914.
