Dès l'automne 1947, Picasso commence à travailler à Vallauris à la fabrique Madoura où il expérimente les techniques de la céramique. Picasso établit alors des liens d'amitiés avec la famille Ramié, propriétaire de l'atelier Madoura. Cette aquarelle a été réalisé d'après une statue de la Vierge à l'Enfant qui appartenait à Gabrielle Douly, grand-mère maternelle de l'actuel propriétaire des fameux ateliers de céramique.

In the fall of 1947, Picasso began experimenting with pottery making and design with the assistance of the Madoura family at their studio in Vallauris. The present work was inspired by a statuette of the Virgin and Child belonging to Suzanne Ramié's grandmother, Gabrielle Douly.
