En bois de kou, la base polylobée soutenant un large bol décoré de cinq étoiles à sept branches insérées dans la paroi et d'un panneau ovale contenant le texte suivant : 1838. Sept.2.1888. He Makana Ia H.R.H. LILIUOKALANI Na Ka A.H.H.L Mahele II, le couvercle surmonté d'une couronne finement sculptée et gravée à l'intérieur d'une couronne stylisée et Liliu. Belle patine brun foncé.

Lot Essay

Ce bol fut offert à la Reine Liliuokalani à l'occasion de son cinquantième anniversaire. Il fut réalisé par John Daniel Wicke (1866-1904), qui était le fils du célèbre ébéniste allemand, Johann Wicke. Voir Jenkins, I., The Hawaiian Calabash, 1989, Honolulu, p.125 pour deux autres bols commandés pour la même occasion. Ils reprennent les motifs des bols commandités au père de John Daniel Wicke pour l'anniversaire du frère de la Reine Liliuokalani en 1886.

This bowl was presented to Queen Liliuokalani on the occasion of her fiftieth birthday . It was carved by John Daniel Wicke (1866-1904), the son of the famous German cabinet maker, Johann Wicke. See Jenkins, I., The Hawaiian Calabash, Honolulu, 1989, p.125, for two other bowls commissioned for the same occasion. They repeat the form and motifs of the bowls made by the father of John Daniel Wicke for the birthday of the brother of Queen Liliuokalani in 1866.
