Each set on a circular stepped domed base, a foliate knopped stem, the bulbous upper-section embossed and chased with stylised leaves and open-worked flowerheads, hung with six copper bells, surmounted by a small six-arched crown, hung with copper bells - 29.5 cm high (2)

Lot Essay

Inscribed in Hebrew on base: "Presented to the Holy Community of Varna by Avraham Rosanes on the occassion of his Bar-Mitsvah on the 6th of Elul 5669". Varna is a major seaport on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, during the 1880s there were 300 Jews in Varna. (See Enc. Judaica Vol. 16 colm 70)
