Lot Essay

This atmospheric interior of a maid busying herself at the end of a corridor captures a moment in time and shows Leonard Campbell Taylor's ability to arrange, balance and light a composition effectively. During his life he was described a 'the greatest living exponent of a minor but lovable domestic school in the great tradition of small scale interiors'.

Taylor was educated at the Ruskin School of Drawing and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1905. He was made an A.R.A. in 1923 and R.A. in 1931.

His carefully constructed interiors reveal his interest in Oriental art and Whistler's harmonious paintings, which combine atmosphere, tone and colour with a strong sense of design.
