Painted when the artist was only seventeen, this jewel-like painting, reminiscent of Bonnington, depicts the first meeting between a young couple. Millais was a child prodigy who entered the Royal Academy Schools aged just eleven. In 1846 he started to exhibit, and two years after this painting was executed, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in his family's house in Gower Street.
