Lot Essay
Leader depicts Burrows Cross, a crossroads outside Gomshall in Surrey. The artist had moved to Gomshall in 1889 from his birth county of Worcestershire. The Scots pine trees are a dominant feature of Leader's Surrey landscapes; they remain characteristic of the landscape today.
A small preparatory sketch for the present lot exists, however it is dated 1893; a common error for Leader who would annotate material retrospectively when preparing it for exhibition or sale.
