Lot Essay

In 1857 Henry Greaves was seven years old, however he would not have sketched this drawing at that time. Both Greaves brothers (Henry and Walter) were particularly eccentric when dating their pictures, and would have based their Chelsea sketches on old photographs taken by James Hedderly. Thus the date implies the time frame of the view rather than when the artist painted it.
