Lot Essay

At first glance, the present painting may appear to relate to 'The Coronation of Nicholas II and Grand Duchess Alexandra Fedorovna' (State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg), painted by Repin in 1894. However, careful examination shows the painting is far from related to the aforementioned work due to the presence of figures such as the peasant woman on the right of the composition and the lack of formal dress worn by the young girl on the left.
