Lot Essay

During 1915-16 Shukhaev executed thirty studies of officers from the Life-Guards Uhlan and Mariupol Hussar regiments for a major work entitled 'Regiment at their positions' (Polk na pozitsiiakh). Unfortunately, this work was never realised and few such studies have survived.

For a comparative study see the exhibition catalogue edited by L. Brylenko, Vasilii Ivanovich Shukhaev, Leningrad, 1968, listed p. 21, illustrated p. 30.

Aleksandr Fedorovich Balitskii was an officer in the 4th Mariupol Hussar Regiment.
