In 1766 Francis Gardner founded his porcelain factory at Verbilki, in the Gzhel' region, where there was an active and long established traditional ceramic industry. The Gardner Factory, famed from the first for quality equal to the best European manufacturer, began to produce statuettes in 1779.

The Nasonov Factory, in the Gzhel' region, operated between 1810 and 1814.
