This lot was owned by Prince Aschwin de Lippe-Biesterfeld (1914-1988). Prince Aschwin de Lippe-Biesterfeld of Jena, Germany (1914-1988), was the son of the Prince of Lippe, Leopold IV, and was the younger brother of Prince Bernhard of Netherladns. He was one of the godparents of Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands. He served his country as an officer in the German army during the Second World War. After museum and university experiences in Berlin through 1945, Prince Ashwin started at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, as a Senior Research Fellow in 1949. He became an Associate Curator in 1950, Reserch Curator in 1965, and Curator Emeritus in 1973. He was a renouned scholar in Indian art, especially in th area of South Indian Sculpture. Aschwin also had a passion for Chinese Classical paintings. His publication include Indian Mediaeval Sculpture, published by North-Holland Publishing Company (Amsterdam) in 1978, and Taste for China: The Crawford Collection, published in 1962.
