Captain William Baillie acquired Rembrandt's most famous plate around 1775, and after re-touching it he printed several editions on French, Indian, Japon paper, and even satin, in ascending order of value. Baillie then took the radical step of cutting the plate into four pieces in order to allay collectors' fears that this print would become too common. Impressions from these fragments were sold alongside the complete prints by the print dealers Boydell in London.
