Castellani, having revolutionised the concept of micromosaic jewellery both in form and subject matter, meant that any micromosaics with traditional scenes such as flower baskets or animals in Castellani settings represent earlier mosaics which were mounted by him for customers. In particular, the reclining spaniel was a very popular motif.
