Dated fourth month, guiyou year (1933)
At the end of the painting, this 1933 handscroll has a long inscription by the artist, describing in detail his arduous process of studying floral paintings. "I started from Baiyang and Qingteng. In the late Ming period, Chen Ruxun is the master of Baiyang School, therefore I copied from him." In this scroll, the flowers are elegant, lively, fresh and enchanting. One can see the Zhang Daqian at this stage had already blended Baiyang and Qingteng's soft and simple literati style with his unique love for freshness and elegance. This is certainly one of Zhang Daqian's best early floral work of his early period.
