[Tipped in:] Autograph letter signed by Dodgson to his Landlady Mrs. Dyer at Eastbourne, the popular Victorian seaside resort, requesting additional rooms for friends. Starting in the late 1870s, Dodgson would stay from July to October at Eastbourne: "Oxford, July 5/85. Dear Mrs. Dyer, If I could have the first and floor sitting-room and both the top bed-rooms, for (say) 4 Guineas a week, I would like that arrangement for a fortnight, as I could put first one friend, and then another; into the extra room- But the rooms are too close for it to be pleasant to have a stranger in one of them. - After a fortnight, I should want my old bedroom again, as I don't want to have friends constantly there, and could not afford to pay for the extra room to keep it from being occupied by a stranger. If this plan would suit you, I could take the rooms (with a few days' notice) as soon as you like. Very truly yours C.L. Dodgson."

FIRST PUBLISHED (SECOND ENGLISH) EDITION, preceded by the American edition. The first edition of 2,000 was recalled by Dodgson, following the unsatisfactory printing of Tenniel's illustrations, and was never offered for public sale. Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 46.
