BROWN, Marcia (b. 1918)
"Cinderella"
signed and captioned on verso
watercolor on illustration board (some adhesion residue at edges), matted and framed
7 3/8 x 17 in. (188 x 432 mm), sheet size
This was reproduced as a double-page illustration on pages [16-17] of the Caldecott Medal winning Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper (New York, 1954); a signed copy in dust jacket is included. "Cinderella is... by turns tender and wry... [it] is a picture-story book... colored--chiefly in a rose and blue...--but more than anything else it is a book of sparkling and witty drawings" (Bader). This fine drawing captures the moment when the fairy godmother turns Cinderella into a princess in a dazzling gown, accompanied by her golden carriage, splendid horses and regal footmen. (2)
