A watercolor drawing illustrating a scene from Oliver Wendell Holmes's The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table, which was originally published in monthly installments, beginning with the first issue of Atlantic Monthly Magazine in November 1857 until October 1858. It was then issued in book form with many subsequent editions, including notes by the author.
The original illustrations for the book were drawn by H.M. Brock in 1902, working for the publishers J.M. Dent and Co., London. Dulac started work for the same publishers in 1905 on their re-published Bronte Sisters series, for which he illustrated 60 plates. As there is no record of a published work of The Autocrat with Dulac's illustrations, it is likely that this was executed as a one-off in order to show his expertise with the art of book illustration to his new-found employers.
