Lot Essay

Drawing of a similar stool illustrated in Pugin's Gothic Furniture, 1835 and reproduced in Paul Atterbury and Clive Wainwright, Pugin A Gothic Passion, London, 1994, p.134, ill. 240. Drawing also illustrated in Alexandra Wedgwood, A.W.N. Pugin and the Pugin Family, London, 1985, p.157, pl.25. Wedgwood comments "This form of revealed construction was based on medieval precedents and was also of course to have considerable implications for the rest of the century in its emphasis on 'truth of construction'".
