The case engraved with foliate and hatched designs, the shuttered rear door engraved with scrolls and cartouches, adjustment levers for Sonne/Silence, Retard/Avance and Grande/Petite sonnerie, signed BOURDIN/hor.er du Roi/Rue de la Paix/24/A PARIS, with foliate engraved mask to a white enamel Roman chapter disc with subsidiary seconds ring at XII, repeat signature, blued steel Breguet hands, alarm disc below, the eight day spring barrels movement with gilt platform to duplex escapement, cut bimetallic balance with segmental compensation weights, strike/repeat/alarm on two bells to the back plate; key

Lot Essay

A grande sonnerie carriage clock with duplex escapement by Bourdin of closely related design to the present example may be seen in Derek Roberts, Carriage and Other Travelling Clocks, Schiffer 1993, p.87, fig.6-11. Bourdin was a fine maker and highly regarded by his contemporaries. See also Allix & Bonnert, Carriage Clocks, Antique Collectors' Club 1973, pp.109-110.
